Where to Stay in the Carpathians

Stay in the mountains and you are on the first cable car and at the castle gate before the day-trippers arrive. Here is where to sleep.

Most visitors see the Carpathians on rushed day trips from Kraków or Bucharest. Spending a few nights in the mountains changes everything: early starts on quiet trails, castles before the tour buses, and evenings of mountain food in the old towns.

There are four classic bases. Brașov for Transylvania — castles, bears and hiking all within an hour; Sinaia for Peleș and the Bucegi cable cars; Zakopane for the Polish Tatras; and the resorts of the Slovak High Tatras for the highest peaks and mountain huts.

Guest scores are Trip.com’s (out of 5). We do not quote nightly rates, because mountain prices swing hugely between ski weekends, summer and the shoulder season — every card links out to Trip.com for live availability.

How to choose

  • Castles first? Brașov, with a night in Sinaia if you want Peleș at opening time.
  • Serious hiking? The High Tatras or Zakopane in summer — or a mountain hut for a night.
  • Skiing? Zakopane or the Slovak resorts; Poiana Brașov for Romania.
  • A special occasion? The Kempinski on Štrbské Pleso or a historic spa hotel in Zakopane.

Booking tips

  • Winter weekends, school holidays and the summer peak (July–August) sell out in Zakopane and the Slovak Tatras — book weeks ahead.
  • Check parking: it is scarce in Brașov’s old town and in central Zakopane.
  • Many hotels have spas and pools — worth it after a long day on the trail.
  • For a true mountain experience, add a night in a hut (cabana, schronisko or chata); these are booked directly with the hut.

Once your bed is sorted, pick your experiences: our ranked tour comparison covers the castle trips, hikes, cable cars and bear watching worth adding.

Where to stay: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to stay in Brașov or Bucharest?

Brașov, if the mountains are your focus. It is under three hours from Bucharest by train, and the castles, trails and bears are all within an hour.

Where should I stay for Morskie Oko?

Zakopane is the usual base; Bukowina Tatrzańska and Białka Tatrzańska are closer to the Palenica Białczańska trailhead.

Where is the best place to stay in the Slovak Tatras?

Štrbské Pleso for the lake and grand hotels, Starý Smokovec for the most central location, Tatranská Lomnica for the Lomnický štít cable car.

Can I sleep in mountain huts?

Yes — cabane, schroniska and chaty offer dorms and simple rooms, often with meals. Book ahead in summer and bring cash.

How much does a hotel in Zakopane cost?

It varies hugely by season: mid-range doubles are often around €70–150, but winter weekends and holidays cost much more. Check live rates.
