The Carpathians have a continental mountain climate: warm summers with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, cold snowy winters and short, beautiful shoulder seasons. Conditions depend heavily on altitude — valley towns such as Brașov or Zakopane can be 25 °C in July while the ridges above 2,000 m are close to freezing in wind and fog.
The short answer: late June to mid-September for high-mountain hiking and the Transfăgărășan, September and early October for the best balance of weather, colour and crowds, and December to March for skiing.
The Carpathians month by month
| Month | Mountains | Crowds | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | Deep winter, snow | High in ski resorts | Skiing and snowy castles |
| February | Winter, snow | High (school holidays) | Best snow; book ahead |
| March | Late winter | Moderate | Spring skiing; valleys thawing |
| April | Snow high up, mud below | Low | Towns and castles; Easter traditions |
| May | Green valleys, snow on peaks | Low | Lovely for towns and low hikes |
| June | Warm, some storms | Rising | Good; high trails open from mid-June in Slovakia |
| July | Warm, afternoon storms | Very high | Transfăgărășan opens; peak hiking |
| August | Warm, afternoon storms | Very high | Peak season; start very early |
| September | Settled, cooler | Moderate | Excellent — our favourite month |
| October | Autumn colour, first snow high up | Low | Beautiful; roads start closing |
| November | Grey, wet, cold | Very low | Quietest month; many trails closed |
| December | Snow arrives | High at Christmas | Christmas markets and early skiing |
Summer (late June – August)
The classic season for the high mountains. Huts are open, cable cars run all day and the Transfăgărășan and Transalpina high roads are usually open from July. The downsides: crowds in Zakopane, at Morskie Oko and at Bran, and almost daily afternoon thunderstorms — start walking early and be off exposed ridges by early afternoon.
Autumn (September – October)
The best-kept secret. September is usually settled and clear, the summer crowds have gone and the beech forests begin to turn. Early October brings spectacular colour, especially in the Bieszczady and the Romanian forests, and the start of the rut when stags roar in the valleys. The first snow can arrive on the high ridges in October.
Winter (December – March)
Zakopane, the Slovak Tatras, Poiana Brașov and Sinaia become ski resorts, and snow-covered Bran and Peleș look straight out of a fairy tale. Many high trails are closed and avalanche danger is real above the tree line; winter hiking requires experience and equipment.
Spring (April – May)
A quiet time: the valleys are green and full of flowers, but snow lingers high up and some trails are muddy or closed. Excellent for Brașov, Sighișoara, the castles and Easter traditions in Maramureș.
Events worth planning around
- Sighișoara medieval festival (usually late July) — music, costumes and crowds in the citadel.
- Tatra Autumn international folk festival in Zakopane (usually August).
- Halloween at Bran Castle — themed parties and tours.
- Christmas and Easter — village traditions in Maramureș and the Polish highlands.
When to avoid
- November: grey, wet and many facilities closed.
- Polish and Romanian public-holiday weekends in resorts, unless booked well ahead.
- The Transfăgărășan outside July–October: the high section is closed.
