Brașov — Kronstadt to its German founders, Brassó in Hungarian — was one of the great Saxon trading cities of Transylvania. Its old town sits in a green bowl at the foot of Tâmpa mountain, with the baroque Council Square at its heart, stretches of medieval wall and bastions on the slopes, and the soaring Black Church, named for the fire of 1689 that blackened its walls.
It is also the most practical base in the Romanian Carpathians. Bran, Râșnov, the bear sanctuary and Piatra Craiului are all within 45 minutes, Sinaia and Peleș about an hour, and Sighișoara and the Saxon villages two hours. Poiana Brașov, Romania’s best-known ski resort, is 20 minutes up the hill.
Top things to do: Brașov
Council Square and the Black Church
Start at Piața Sfatului, with the old Council House (now the county history museum) in the middle. A few steps away, the Black Church is the largest Gothic church in the region, with a collection of Anatolian carpets given by merchants and a large organ; there is an entry fee and concerts in summer.
Ride or hike up Tâmpa
A cable car climbs to the top of Tâmpa, near the Hollywood-style BRAȘOV sign, for the classic view over the red roofs. Fit walkers can take the zig-zag footpath up through the forest in about an hour.
Walk the walls and Rope Street
Follow the old walls past the Weavers’ Bastion, the Black and White Towers and Catherine’s Gate, then squeeze down Strada Sforii, one of the narrowest streets in Europe. The Schei district, with the First Romanian School and St Nicholas Church, tells the Romanian side of the city’s story.
Use Brașov as your base
From here, day trips run to Bran and Peleș, the Transfăgărășan, Sighișoara and Viscri, and there are evening bear-watching trips into the forest. See our where to stay guide for hotels.

How to get to Brașov
- By train from Bucharest: frequent daily trains through the Prahova valley take around 2.5–3 hours, depending on the service.
- From Bucharest airport (OTP): shuttle buses and private transfers run direct to Brașov in roughly 3–3.5 hours.
- By road: about 170 km from Bucharest on the DN1 — beware of heavy weekend traffic in the Prahova valley.
- From Sibiu or Cluj: trains and buses connect Brașov with the rest of Transylvania; Sibiu is around 2.5 hours by road.
Insider tips
- Stay inside or near the old town — everything is walkable, and the station is a short taxi or bus ride away.
- Brown bears sometimes wander into the outer districts at night, especially in Răcădău and near forest edges. Never feed them and keep your distance.
- Taxis are cheap; use ride-hailing apps or official taxis with meters.
- Many museums close on Mondays. The Black Church also has limited hours on Sundays.
- Evenings on Council Square are lively in summer, with outdoor cafés and occasional concerts.
