The Tatras are the highest range in the Carpathians and the only truly alpine mountains in Poland, shared with Slovakia. On the Polish side, Tatra National Park (Tatrzański Park Narodowy) protects granite peaks, glacial lakes, limestone valleys and forests with bears, chamois and marmots. It is one of the most visited national parks in Europe.
Its most famous sight is Morskie Oko (“Eye of the Sea”), a glacial lake at about 1,395 m below the walls of the Mięguszowieckie peaks and Rysy (2,499 m), Poland’s highest summit. Other classics are the Kasprowy Wierch cable car, the Valley of Five Polish Ponds, the Kościeliska valley and the airy Orla Perć ridge path for experts.
Top things to do: Tatra National Park & Morskie Oko
Walk to Morskie Oko
From the Palenica Białczańska car park, an asphalt road climbs about 9 km to the lake — around 2–2.5 hours on foot each way. Horse-drawn carts carry part of the way (a controversial tradition). Eat at the historic mountain hut by the shore, and if you have energy, climb on to Czarny Staw pod Rysami.
Kasprowy Wierch
The cable car from Kuźnice reaches the summit at 1,987 m in about 20 minutes. Walk along the border ridge, descend on foot through Hala Gąsienicowa, or ski in winter. Online tickets for specific times help avoid the queues.
Valley of Five Polish Ponds
A full-day hike from Palenica past the Wodogrzmoty Mickiewicza waterfalls to a high valley of five lakes, with a mountain hut, then over to Morskie Oko. One of the finest days out in the Tatras.
Gentle valleys
Kościeliska and Chochołowska valleys are wide, easy and beautiful — ideal for families, with caves and, in spring, crocus meadows.

How to get to Tatra National Park & Morskie Oko
- From Zakopane: buses and minibuses run to Palenica Białczańska (for Morskie Oko), Kuźnice (for Kasprowy) and the valley entrances.
- Car parking at Palenica: must be booked online in advance in season and fills up — the bus or a transfer with park ticket is easier.
- From Kraków: around 2.5–3 hours to the trailheads; Morskie Oko day trips handle everything.
Insider tips
- A park entry fee is charged at every trailhead; tickets can also be bought online.
- Start early — by 10:00 in summer the road to Morskie Oko is a procession.
- Many high trails are closed in winter and avalanche risk is real; check TOPR (mountain rescue) and park announcements.
- Orla Perć and the Rysy summit are serious routes for experienced mountain walkers only.
- Bears are present — never leave food around and do not approach them.
