Slovenský raj, the Slovak Paradise, is a limestone plateau cut by deep, narrow gorges just south of the High Tatras. Instead of climbing around the waterfalls, the trails climb straight up them — on steel ladders, wooden footbridges, stemples and chains. It is exhilarating, very popular and suitable for most active people with a head for heights.
The best-known gorges are Suchá Belá, Piecky and Veľký Sokol, while the Hornád gorge is followed by a path of chains and ladders above the river, including the Tomášovský výhľad viewpoint. Nearby, the Dobšinská Ice Cave is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Top things to do: Slovak Paradise
Suchá Belá gorge
The classic: from Podlesok near Hrabušice, a 3–4 hour loop climbs through the gorge on ladders beside waterfalls such as Misové vodopády, then returns through the forest.
Hornád gorge and Tomášovský výhľad
Walk the river gorge on chains and footbridges, then climb to the Tomášovský výhľad rock balcony for the park’s most famous view.
Dobšinská Ice Cave
On the southern side of the park, this cave holds a huge mass of permanent ice. Guided tours run in the summer season; bring warm clothes.
How to get to Slovak Paradise
- From Poprad: about 30 minutes by car to Hrabušice-Podlesok; local buses are infrequent.
- From the High Tatras: an easy day trip by car.
- From Košice: about 1.5 hours by car; eastern Slovakia day trips often combine Spiš Castle and the Tatras.
Insider tips
- Many ladder gorges are one-way (uphill only) for safety — follow the signs.
- A small park fee is charged at the main entry points in season.
- Wear shoes with good grip; ladders and rocks are slippery when wet, and after heavy rain some gorges close.
- Go early on summer weekends to avoid queues on the ladders.
