The jagged limestone ridge of Piatra Craiului rising above green slopes

Piatra Craiului

Romania’s most dramatic limestone ridge

Piatra Craiului — “the King’s Stone” — is a single, knife-edged limestone ridge about 25 km long, running from near Zărnești towards the Dâmbovița valley. It is protected as a national park, home to bears, wolves, lynx and chamois, and to a flower found nowhere else: the Piatra Craiului pink (Dianthus callizonus).

Most visitors never go near the crest. The foothills are glorious walking country — Zărnești Gorge, the meadows of Plaiul Foii and the scattered hamlets of Măgura and Peștera, where shepherds still move flocks between summer pastures. The ridge traverse itself is one of the great challenges of the Romanian Carpathians.

Top things to do: Piatra Craiului

Walk Zărnești Gorge

A gravel road and path lead from the edge of Zărnești into a narrow gorge between vertical walls, then on up to the Curmătura mountain hut. It is the classic introduction to the park and suitable for most walkers.

Stay in Măgura or Peștera

These villages, reached by rough roads from Moieciu and Bran, sit on high meadows with a front-row view of the ridge. Guesthouses serve home-made cheese and the evenings are silent.

Tackle the ridge — with care

The full traverse is a long, exposed day with chains and scrambling sections; accidents happen every year. Go only in stable weather, with experience, or with a guide — see the guided hike from Brașov.

Libearty Bear Sanctuary

On the edge of Zărnești, this sanctuary gives a home to more than a hundred bears rescued from captivity. Guided visits run at set times.

How to get to Piatra Craiului

  • From Brașov: Zărnești is about 30 km (40 minutes) by car; local buses and trains also connect the two.
  • From Bran: about 15–20 minutes by car.
  • Park fee: a small conservation fee applies; buy it at the park visitor centre or from rangers.

Insider tips

  • Start early and carry plenty of water — there are few springs on the limestone ridge.
  • Shepherds’ dogs guard the flocks fiercely. Keep your distance, do not run, and walk around the flock.
  • This is serious bear country: hike in groups, make noise and carry bear spray if you know how to use it.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy in the gorges and on the western side.
